Without any formal lessons, junior Evan Morud has taught himself how to take photos. Morud said he worked with other photographers on different media outlets.

Morud used to take photos on his phone, but after switching to a professional camera in June, said he became more invested in photography.

“I always enjoyed taking photos with my phone and wanted the ability to do more with it,” Morud said.

Morud focuses on taking nature and sports photos, then posts them on Instagram for others to see. Recently, Morud has been capturing photos of Inglemoor’s sports teams, including the basketball and football teams.

Morud was inspired by sports announcer Sean Valley at many Northshore School District sporting events. Valley multitasks at the game by taking photos while he announces.

“I saw what Sean Valley was doing at the games—thought that was kind of cool. I thought, maybe, I could be like him,” Morud said.

Morud now brings his Nikon D5600 camera to many sporting events.

“I’m a big fan of many different kinds of sports,” Morud said. “I love watching the game—the athletes give me the game, and I give back to them by taking pictures.”

This winter, most of Morud’s photos have centered around the girls and boys basketball teams.

“Basketball is my favorite because of the intensity and action you can pick up on,” Morud said.

The photos Morud takes are a fleeting moment in time showing the game to people as a collection of moments instead of the big picture. In some of Morud’s photos, the crowd is cheering on the team alongside the cheerleaders and marching band. He takes photos of the people watching the games, bringing the athletes and crowd together.

Depending on the school and the event, Morud might not be allowed to be on the floor taking photos.

“I want to continue taking sports photos depending on what places will let me do, but my other photos, I will continue,” Morud said.

With the remainder of Morud’s high school experience, there are many sporting events he said he plans on going to.

Photography is not a full-time career path Morud wants to follow, but he wants to continue taking photos after high school.
