This year, the campus security team welcomed two new personnel: Colin Portugal, replacing former campus supervisor Ric Calhoun, and Victor Camarena, taking on a full-time position as parking supervisor. With the courtyard largely inaccessible as part of phase one of the Inglemoor High School Replacement Project, campus security has taken on increased responsibility.
Campus supervisor Sarah Beeson (she/her) said the addition of new staff was because of an increased need for supervision due to the effects of construction.
“Our campus is very divided now. You used to be able to stand at one end of the campus and see all the way to that end, and so it just requires more eyes,” Beeson said.
She said that it is more time consuming because she and other supervisors need to be physically in an area to supervise it.
Student parking has also been expanded to the Lighthouse Foursquare Church, which rents out their lot to Inglemoor during the day under regular supervision. Additionally, campus security is currently assessing new safety concerns, such as students walking in front of cars while crossing the street near the portables.
“We’re actually figuring that out now. We have been seeing where the problem areas are and where we need to focus our attention,” Beeson said.
Construction has forced campus security to make major adaptations, but Beeson said that their greatest priority is maintaining relationships with students. She hopes students are willing to interact with them in a way that goes beyond discipline or campus policies.
“We’re always open. You could talk to any one of us,” Beeson said. “We’re not just here to get you in trouble. We’re also here as a resource. We want you to feel comfortable coming and talking to us about anything.”
Students can find Beeson and the rest of the campus supervisors in room 220, a new room on the west side of the cafeteria building.
