As we say goodbye to warm summer days and welcome the unpredictable temperature swings of fall weather, the season’s moodiness demands a change in wardrobe. The Pacific Northwest in particular requires its own set of versatile staple pieces and creative fashion choices to truly bring an outfit together.
Junior Tyler Regala (he/him) said he favors fall fashion as the weather offers more flexibility in style, allowing him to incorporate a wider range of creativity into his everyday outfits.
“I really like the fall season. I really like the weather. It allows me to be more comfortable, with layering stuff,” Regala said. “In the summer, you can’t really put on more than just a T-shirt because it’s too hot. But in the fall, you can wear a bunch of different clothes, like wear a long sleeve under a button-up or something.”
Senior Gregory Rayburn (he/him) often purchases blank shirts from popular brands such as Abercrombie and Uniqlo to style with rarer pieces.
“From those places, I’ll get more basic stuff, just like plain stuff without labels, just to sort of make up most of my outfit,” Rayburn said. “And then I’ll try, when I’m thrifting (to) look for more unique stuff to make it exciting.”
While basic essentials such as baggy jeans, puffer vests, sweaters and fleece jackets are all fall favorites, accessories play an equally important role in completing a look. In order to personalize an outfit, Regala relies on a combination of thrifted and brand-new jewelry.
“I always have bracelets on or a necklace. Layering necklaces is nice too. And I also think piercings add to a fit,” Regala said.
Senior Anna Marroquin (she/her) experiments with different hairstyles and nail colors to complement her outfits. She also enjoys using bows to accessorize. To match the autumn aesthetic, she has started to put more consideration into her color combinations.
“I love the colors of fall,” Marroquin said. “I definitely like wearing a lot of browns. I got brown nails done. I like darker colors, you know, navy, mauve, black. I definitely wear a lot of black during the fall, too, and gray.”
Similarly, Regala prefers an earthy color palette with green, brown and red tones. While he enjoys putting in effort to create nice fall looks, he also recommends staple pieces that are suitable for more relaxed days.
“Like a good pair of sweatpants that you can just rely on when you’re too lazy to put on something actual,” Regala said.
Marroquin typically pairs her sweats with a cozy warm sweater. As for her preferences in fall footwear, she said she appreciates both the stylish and cozy fall shoe options.
“I love boots for the fall, either they be like mini boots or knee-high boots,” Marroquin said. “Comfortable shoes that be like Uggs or other sort of slippers.”
Marroquin said that she especially favors Uggs for their ability to complement most outfit combinations. Rayburn also mentioned other popular Pacific Northwest brands for the fall, including The North Face, Patagonia and Carhartt.
“I do have a lot of their stuff for when I go hiking or camping. They’re good quality, comfy and warm, and I also just feel like they’re good for any occasion. They’re versatile,” Rayburn said.
With such a vast amount of clothing options to choose from, discovering personal style can feel overwhelming. Marroquin recommends turning to the internet for assistance.
“Start a Pinterest for your fall outfits and then go ahead and find some inspiration,” she said. “I think that basing your outfits on other people’s is going to help you notice what you like and what you don’t like. So definitely take inspiration from others.”
